FAQ

Do the fast photodiode detectors (FPD & FPS-1) have attenuators and fiber adapters available for them?

Yes, there are a variety of accessories such as attenuators and fiber adapters available for the FPD & FPS-1 Fast Photodiode Detectors. Fast Photodiode Detectors are used for displaying temporal pulse shape on an oscilloscope. Please note that in order to mount these accessories to the FPS-1 you will need the SM1-to-M20 adapter 1G02259. This is mentioned in the catalog spec page but is sometimes missed. No adapter is needed for FPD models.

When using the fiber optic adaptor, how do we handle power loss due to the fiber relative to calibration?

All Ophir power meters, including photodiode power meters, have an air gap between the fiber tip and the sensor. Therefore they measure the power emitted by the fiber into the air and do not take into account any reflection losses there are in the fiber. Therefore, if in actual use, the fiber will be coupled with no loss to another element, then the losses should be added to the reading. These losses are usually about 4%. Thus if the reading on the Ophir meter is say 100mW, then in lossless use, the real power will be 104mW.

Can the PD300 be used with the filter in and with fiber adapter at the same time?

Yes, the adapter is arranged so the user can use it either with filter out or in.

Do I need to recalibrate my instrument? How often must it be recalibrated?

Unless otherwise indicated, Ophir sensors and meters should be recalibrated within 18 months after initial purchase, and then once a year after that.

To connect a fiber to an Ophir sensor, why do I need 2 items – an “Adapter” and a “Mounting Bracket”

The idea is used with most (though not all) sensors; the fiber optic connectors are standard (such as FC, SMA, etc.), but the sensors are all different in their mechanics, so we use the standard FO connectors but provide in addition mounting brackets for connecting the FO connectors to the various sensors.

Measuring beams coming out of a fiber Measuring beams coming out of a fiber

When you measure a beam coming out of a fiber, there are some parameters that have a different meaning than they do when referring to "regular" beam measurements. This video clarifies some issues you'll need to keep in mind.

Fiber Adapter accessory

When using a Fiber Adapter accessory together with one of Ophir's sensors, it is important to be aware of the power/energy density that is going to reach the sensor's surface. In most cases, the fiber adapter locates the fiber tip far enough away from the absorber surface that the spot diameter on the surface will be large, and problems of damage avoided. However, that is not always a certainty! For example, when using a sensor from the PD300 series, especially with filter IN, this distance could be quite small. A power level that is within spec limits could still result in a power Read more...

Measuring Power out of a Fiber

We recently came across an interesting customer problem, in which every time he disconnected the FO connector from the adapter (that is mounted on the sensor) and then reconnected it, the power read about 50-100 uW higher than it did (nothing else changed). It then took about 10 minutes to slowly come back down to what it had been. After an investigation, we found that the increase in reading when disconnecting/reconnecting the fiber connector is a thermal effect, and not a technical flaw in the unit. If you experience something like this, the most likely direct cause is one of the following Read more...

Customers that purchase the above items also consider the following items. Ophir-Spiricon meters and sensors include a standard manufacturers warranty for one year. Add a one year Extended Warranty to your meter or sensor, which includes one recalibration.
  • Fiber Adapter Mounting Bracket
A mounting bracket is needed to connect most thermal sensors to a fiber adapter (SC, ST, FC or SMA). This bracket can be used for thermal sensors with an 18mm diameter.
  • 30 P/SV/HE Fiber Bracket
A mounting bracket is needed to connect most thermal sensors to a fiber adapter (SC, ST, FC or SMA). This bracket can be used for thermal sensors with a 17mm diameter.
  • 50(150)/F150 Fiber Bracket
A mounting bracket is needed to connect most thermal sensors to a fiber adapter (SC, ST, FC or SMA). This bracket can be used for thermal sensors with a 26mm diameter.
