一例として蛍光顕微鏡による検査を見て見ましょう。光退色または光活性化などの用途では、正確に規定された照射光量が実験の再現性にとって極めて重要です。しかしながら光源の出力は時間とともに変化し、また標本に照射される総エネルギー量は顕微鏡の光ビーム経路、ならびに使用されるフィルターセットおよび対物レンズによって左右されます。このため異なった顕微鏡を使用して行われた実験を比較することは簡単ではありません。正確に校正されたパワーメーターを使用すると、光源や顕微鏡の光学的スペックに関係なく標本に照射された正確な光量を測定することが可能です。 このような客観的な測定により、研究者は様々な光学機器や設定を使用して行われた実験の結果を直接比較することができます。
