{"id":6568,"date":"2017-04-05T12:30:53","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T12:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/laser-measurement\/?p=6568"},"modified":"2024-06-27T14:45:47","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T14:45:47","slug":"can-really-measure-laser-beam-quality-m-squared-real-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/can-really-measure-laser-beam-quality-m-squared-real-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Can You Really Measure Laser Beam Quality (M Squared) in Real Time?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>M-Squared is arguably the single <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ophiropt.com\/m-squared-lasers-kpi-key-performance-indicator\/\">most important factor<\/a> when determining the potential efficiency of your laser.<\/p>\n<p>However, it can be a pain to measure.\u00a0 Since the beam quality can be calculated only by taking several measurements along the laser beam caustic, you will typically need to move either the camera or laser source along its axis to get snapshots at different locations.<\/p>\n<p>Here are two approaches you can use that actually DON\u2019T move the camera or the laser:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>BeamSquared for very reliable M2 measurement<\/li>\n<li>MS-1780 for real time (20 Hz) M2 measurement<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As usual, to decide which method is right for you, you\u2019ll have to take a closer look at the tradeoffs\u2026<\/p>\n<h4>MS-1780<\/h4>\n<p>Both BeamSquared and the MS-1780 are <em>technically<\/em> accurate to 5%, but for the MS-1780 this is in ideal conditions.\u00a0 In reality, it can be hard to reach that level because it is very sensitive to setup conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The incredible speed is from its patented method of using laser optics to sample the beam at 10 spots in the caustic in one shot.\u00a0 Not only does this mean you can get your measurement without waiting, it also enables real-time M2 tracking to see thermal transients in your lasers and optics, changes occurring over a few seconds of warm-up time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/M2_Measurment_blog.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6569 lazyload\" data-src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/M2_Measurment_blog.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"171\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/M2_Measurment_blog.png 676w, https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/M2_Measurment_blog-300x76.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 676px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 676\/171;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tricky part is the setup:\u00a0 You need to get the internal focus in the right place, as well as precise horizontal\/vertical alignment.<\/p>\n<p>Note \u2013 we\u2019ve noticed that some customer have no trouble at all getting this set up.\u00a0 These lasers tend to be small (~2mm or less) and highly ideal Gaussians (M2 of 1.0-1.5, few imperfections).<\/p>\n<p>So, to summarize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pros:<\/strong> Very fast, small<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cons:<\/strong> Very difficult setup, hard to attain maximum accuracy (5%)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Good for:<\/strong> Laser manufacturer production line (or another case where the system can be set up one time and kept fastened for future measurements); small, ideal Gaussians<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>BeamSquared<\/h4>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t heard of this yet, BeamSquared is the next generation of the classic Ophir-Spiricon M2\u2011200s system for M-Squared measurement.\u00a0 Among improvements made to the older version, this is faster and more compact.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with the MS-1780, though, you might consider this clunky, but consider this:<\/p>\n<p>The BeamSquared can take more samples as required (e.g., ten each in the far field and near field) for much higher accuracy, and likewise is less dependent on setup.<\/p>\n<p>It operates by folding the beam with multiple mirrors, then moving the mirrors along an optical train, stopping for samples as chosen.<\/p>\n<p>(Using more mirrors to \u201cfold\u201d the beam path was one of the main improvements in this generation of M2 measurement system, which allows the BeamSquared to be both smaller and faster.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pros:<\/strong> Much easier to attain ideal (5%) accuracy, ISO compliant<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cons:<\/strong> Larger, slower<\/li>\n<li><strong>Good for:<\/strong> Research, any case where ease-of-use or ISO is a primary consideration, large or non-ideal Gaussian beams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Want to learn more about measuring M-Squared?
