{"id":5234,"date":"2015-07-29T09:00:03","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T09:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/laser-measurement\/?p=5234"},"modified":"2024-06-20T09:31:03","modified_gmt":"2024-06-20T09:31:03","slug":"the-top-mistake-medical-device-engineers-make-when-designing-laser-integration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/the-top-mistake-medical-device-engineers-make-when-designing-laser-integration\/","title":{"rendered":"The Top Mistake Medical Device Engineers Make When Designing Laser Integration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve all been there before.<\/p>\n<p>Struggling to reduce the cost of the BOM, we try to do everything ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>After all, you\u2019re an engineer, aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 You have your own staff of hardware and software engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists, and anyone else you might need.<\/p>\n<p>So, if there\u2019s a complex part that adds a significant cost to your BOM, you\u2019ll try to cut corners.\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s see how we can design that ourselves,\u201d you say\u2026<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Any of this ringing a bell?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that you\u2019re integrating a laser into your medical device.\u00a0 You realize &#8211; sooner or later &#8211; that you\u2019re going to have to include a laser power meter or other sensor.\u00a0 If not for the safety of the patients, in many cases this is required by law.<\/p>\n<p>But wait &#8211; you weren\u2019t born yesterday.\u00a0 You know that you can get a cheap photodiode for a few bucks, or even a few cents.\u00a0 You must be a sucker to pay hundreds of dollars for a complete power measurement solution, right?<\/p>\n<p>Not quite.<\/p>\n<p>The tricky thing here is that we need to compare apples to apples.<\/p>\n<p>When you have your \u201cBOM blinders\u201d on, all you can see is the price of the part.<\/p>\n<p>But what about the amount of time to design it?\u00a0 What about when you realize that this isn\u2019t as simple as you thought?<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you\u2019ve got a hardware engineer in your office.\u00a0 He can design a simple amplification circuit for the photodiode.\u00a0 At first, this approach seems to make sense.\u00a0 And it\u2019s very appealing, since you know your boss is going to appreciate the money saved on the BOM.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, there are a few issues with going down this road:<\/p>\n<h2>Calibrated Measurement<\/h2>\n<p>First and foremost: cheap photodiodes are nice, but they are not calibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Ophir sensors are calibrated traceable to a NIST gold standard. \u00a0Uncalibrated sensors are okay for relative measurements, but they will never give you the true power of the laser. \u00a0In the medical realm in particular, you will need accurate measurements to pass regulations.<\/p>\n<h2>What about high power?<\/h2>\n<p>Photodiodes have a very low power capability. \u00a0(Typically up to hundreds of mW at best.) \u00a0Assuming your laser is measured in Watts if not tens of Watts, how can you measure it with a photodiode?<\/p>\n<p>You will need to use attenuation. \u00a0Enter the wonderful world of optics.<\/p>\n<p>Did you consider that the attenuation could change as a function of time?
