What\u2019s the one quality you need to be a great scientist?<\/p>\n

Intelligence?\u00a0 Diligence?<\/p>\n

If you ask Ephraim Greenfield, co-founder of Ophir, he\u2019ll probably tell you it\u2019s a mixture of luck and being willing to just go ahead and try something.<\/p>\n

We can speculate and theorize until our brains are fried, but sooner or later, you just need to get into the lab, perform an experiment, and see what happens.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the only way to really see how things work.<\/p>\n

But I have to warn the reader that not everything Ephraim did as a child is safe, advisable, or wise.\u00a0 But in Ephraim\u2019s own words, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be able to get anything accomplished these days with all the safety officers telling me what not to do…\u201d<\/p>\n

About Ephraim\u2026<\/span><\/h1>\n

What was your childhood like?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I was interested in science from a young age.\u00a0 I would go to the library and read through entire shelves of books on science, nature, and biology.<\/p>\n

At 12, I ordered some parts from Edmund Optics and put together my first telescope.\u00a0 That\u2019s when I found out the value of a telescope in a heavily-polluted city like Detroit.<\/p>\n

Around the same time, I got it in my head to build a rocket.\u00a0 My older brother courteously provided me with some materials from his high school chem lab, and I began to assemble a rocket.\u00a0 Before I could test it, though, it exploded in my face.<\/p>\n

My mother was usually afraid to come down to my experimental \u201clab\u201d in the basement, but she would often ask, \u201cWhat are you doing down there?\u00a0 I can smell it from the kitchen!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tell us a little about your education.<\/h2>\n

After majoring in math in undergrad, I realized that it was too abstract for me and went on to get a Masters in physics instead.\u00a0 I then immigrated to Israel, where I was introduced to Dr. Shaul Yatziv, who was working on a new Raman laser system.\u00a0 When I arrived, Dr. Yatziv told me to take a look at their Raman laser setup.\u00a0 The laser was intended to fire at a container of pressurized gas and I was warned: \u201cBe careful!\u00a0 It\u2019s very dangerous.\u201d\u00a0 So, just like as a kid with my rocket, I went into the room and just fired the laser right into the gas.\u00a0 It worked just fine.<\/p>\n

I continued research in Dr. Yatziv\u2019s lab and did my PhD there, which was based on a similar setup, with an underground container of cyanide gas.\u00a0 This was even more dangerous, since it had enough cyanide gas to poison the entire university.\u00a0 But as before, I didn\u2019t let this stop me and got my hands dirty (not literally) to complete my PhD.<\/p>\n

Why did you start a company?\u00a0 What did you expect from it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After my studies, I couldn\u2019t find any work opportunities, so I decided to start a new company instead.\u00a0 I approached Professor Ze\u2019ev Lev who put me in touch with Dr. Yaakov Zerem.\u00a0 Together we founded Ophir in 1976.<\/p>\n

My hope was to be successful enough to make a living, maybe hire two or three people to work with us.\u00a0 Dr. Zerem had a higher goal in mind.\u00a0 He said: \u201cLet\u2019s grow to be a several-hundred-employee company.\u201d<\/p>\n

With four corporate offices around the world, and dozens of distributors, Dr. Zerem won the bet.<\/p>\n

Like Rome, Ophir didn\u2019t grow in a day.\u00a0 It grew slowly, but steadily, and year by year it became the successful company it is today.<\/p>\n

Show us a day in the life of a CTO:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At 71, I<\/span> still bike to work every day, weather permitting. (Editor\u2019s note: That\u2019s 7 km of hilly terrain!)<\/p>\n

In terms of coming up with new products, I believe that the best ideas come from our customers, so most of my day is spent emailing and talking with customers, trying solving their problems.<\/p>\n
