{"id":4215,"date":"2015-03-04T10:00:28","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T10:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/laser-measurement\/?p=4215"},"modified":"2024-09-19T13:00:45","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T13:00:45","slug":"how-to-find-the-perfect-laser-beam-profiler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/how-to-find-the-perfect-laser-beam-profiler\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Find the Perfect Laser Beam Profiler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wish I could tell you that there is one super-profiler, and it will profile any laser with 100% accuracy!<\/p>\n<p>Of course that\u2019s a pipe dream.\u00a0There are tons of different laser types, so it stands to reason that we\u2019ll need several different profilers to cover the range of lasers.\u00a0 There are cameras and scanning slit profilers, both with many options for detector types.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here are the questions you\u2019ll need to ask yourself to find the right laser beam profiler for your laser and application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wavelength<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The wavelength of your laser determines the kind of detector your beam profiler should have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Si \u2013 Visible, NIR<\/li>\n<li>Ge, InGaAs \u2013 NIR<\/li>\n<li>Pyroelectric \u2013 UV, IR, THz<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those price-conscious among us should note that the Si and Ge sensors are less expensive than the InGaAs and pyroelectric varieties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beam Size<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For large beams, you must find a profiler with a large enough aperture.<\/p>\n<p>For small beams, there are other concerns:\u00a0 If you\u2019re using a camera, your beam should be at least 10 pixels wide for best accuracy.\u00a0 If you\u2019re using a scanning slit, the beam should be at least four times the slit width, giving a minimum of about 8 \u03bcm.<\/p>\n<p>For both large and small laser beams, keep in mind that you can use expanding or reducing optics to allow use of previously incompatible profilers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This might seem straightforward, but I think this is most convoluted one of all.<\/p>\n<p>Each beam profiler has a saturation level and also a damage threshold.\u00a0 Exceeding the damage threshold can cause damage (duh), while saturating the profiler will reduce your measurement accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Cameras have a very low saturation level, meaning that all but the lowest power lasers will need some form of attenuation.\u00a0 Furthermore, the attenuation itself has a damage threshold, so you may need some combination of ND filters, beam splitters, and other optics to profile your beam correctly.<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend discussing this with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/contact-us\/photonics\">Ophir-Spiricon expert<\/a>, since it gets pretty complicated.\u00a0 If you do want to go down the rabbit hole, you can start with my series on <a href=\"\/?p=4012\">beam profiler attenuation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, this is one field where scanning slits shine.\u00a0 They can often measure up to kilowatts of power without any attenuation, due to the fact that the spinning slit only lets the beam hit the detector a small percentage of the time, effectively lowering the beam\u2019s average power by that factor.<\/p>\n<p>For very high lasers, though, scanning slits will also need some form of attenuation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pulsed or CW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cameras work with both CW and pulsed lasers.\u00a0 Scanning slits work unless the laser is pulsing at a low rep rate.\u00a0 At higher rep rates, it works fine.<\/p>\n<p>The line between low and high rep rate depends on your beam size and the scan rotation speed.\u00a0 The <a href=\"\/?p=3325\">reason<\/a> behind this is a bit complicated, but the end result is quite simple: check this table to find how fast your laser must pulse to allow scanning slit use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015-1-14-chart-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4217 lazyload\" title=\"2015-1-14 chart 1\" data-src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015-1-14-chart-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"569\" height=\"804\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 569px;
