{"id":3808,"date":"2014-07-09T12:31:20","date_gmt":"2014-07-09T12:31:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/laser-measurement\/?p=3808"},"modified":"2024-09-12T14:20:14","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T14:20:14","slug":"how-to-measure-the-laser-power-density","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/how-to-measure-the-laser-power-density\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Measure Laser Power Density"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a great one.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of those head-smackingly simple ideas that make you say, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t I think of that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Little Trick Goes a Long Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to turn an everyday power meter into a laser power density meter:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Step 1: Take an ordinary power sensor that\u2019s a good fit for your laser power, energy, intensity, wavelength, etc.\u00a0 (Use our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/laser-sensor-finder\">sensor finder<\/a> if you need help.)<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Cover the aperture with a suitable material (see below), and leave a small window open.\u00a0 If your laser beam is big enough, leave a square centimeter window in the center.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Read the output power (in mW, W, or whatever) from your power meter and convert in your head by simply adding \u201cper cm squared.\u201d\u00a0 Since you\u2019re only measuring the power of the part of the laser that passed through the window, you\u2019re clearly measuring the laser\u2019s power density in units of W (or mW) per centimeter squared.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s be more specific.\u00a0 What makes a good \u201caperture cover\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, and this should be obvious, but make sure it can stand up to whatever power your laser is.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t do to start a fire just because you wanted to check how powerful your laser is.<\/p>\n<p>So, assuming you\u2019re on top of any possible safety hazards, here\u2019s what you need to check:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Use a material that won\u2019t heat up.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually not enough that the material can withstand the heat.\u00a0 If it heats up at all it will compromise the power sensor\u2019s accuracy, as the sensor will measure heat flow both from the laser and from the new sensor cover.\u00a0 This will affect the power reading.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you can\u2019t find such a material, try using a reflective surface like polished aluminum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Questions and Tricky Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Question: What if the entire laser beam is smaller than a centimeter squared?\u00a0 Many lasers aren\u2019t even a millimeter, let alone a centimeter.<\/p>\n<p>Answer: Simply use a smaller window, such that it will only transmit a part of your laser.<\/p>\n<p>The centimeter size is really just to make things simpler, but you can use any size window, as long you know its size precisely.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say it\u2019s a mm<sup>2<\/sup> instead of a cm<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 This means your power reading is in units of W\/mm<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 Truth is, that\u2019s already a power density measurement.\u00a0 But assuming you want to see the more standard units of W\/cm<sup>2<\/sup>, you just need to multiply by 100 (since 1 cm<sup>2<\/sup> = 100 mm<sup>2<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p>To make things even simpler, the Nova II and Vega power meters come with a power density function (Menu &gt; Density).\u00a0 Enter the beam diameter (or the diameter of your aperture) and the meter will display power density units.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Question: What about non-uniform laser beams, such as a Gaussian?<\/p>\n<p>Answer: Well, one option would be to go about it similarly to a uniform beam, but with special care that the center (peak) of the laser beam is focused on the window so you don\u2019t underestimate the power density.\u00a0 The problem is that even within the window it\u2019s doubtful that the power will be uniform.<\/p>\n<p>A better solution would be to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/c\/laser-position-sensors\">BeamTrack<\/a> or a full-fledged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/c\/laser-beam-profilers\">laser beam profiler<\/a> to measure the actual beam width and <a href=\"\/?p=1571\">calculate power density<\/a> from there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now I\u2019d like to ask you a question\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You ever come up with a cool laser measurement trick?<\/p>\n<p>Or, did you ever wish there was a simple trick to solve your laser measurement snag?<\/p>\n<p>Let me know in the comments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a great one.
