Calculation of Beam Profile and Beam Width<\/p>\n<p>Wait a minute\u2026 How do I know that this is correct?\u00a0 Should we just take BeamGage\u2019s word for it?<\/p>\n<p>Absolutely not!<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 BeamGage is an excellent laser beam profiling system.\u00a0 It has even helped set industry standards.\u00a0 What I\u2019m saying is yes, of course, <em>use<\/em> BeamGage.\u00a0 But the whole point of beam profiling and laser measurement in general is: don\u2019t trust your laser.\u00a0 Don\u2019t trust your beam profiler.\u00a0 Don\u2019t trust anything.\u00a0 <em>Measure it<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at how accuracy is ensured with each step of the beam profiling process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Camera<\/li>\n<li>Analog to Digital converter (A\/D)<\/li>\n<li>Image Processing<\/li>\n<li>Data Computations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Camera<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Ophir-Spiricon-Laser-Beam-Profiler1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3353 alignleft lazyload\" title=\"Ophir-Spiricon Laser Beam --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 160\/258;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ophir-Spiricon Laser Beam Profiler<\/p>\n<p>The digital array of pixels in the camera is made very precisely; pixel pitch is usually accurate to the range of tenths of nanometers (angstroms).\u00a0 That said, each profiler has its own intended application, so it\u2019s important to remember that a camera may be very accurate in one situation and less so in another.\u00a0 This comes into play when choosing your laser beam profiler.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rqcmcVUdtT4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>https:\/\/youtu.be\/rqcmcVUdtT4<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Electronics \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At this point, you can use your knowledge of the camera\u2019s SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio).\u00a0 Let\u2019s say it\u2019s 60 dB<sub>volt<\/sub> (1000:1) and you\u2019re using a 12-bit digitizer, yielding 4,096 counts.\u00a0 In this case the RMS noise is about 4.1 counts.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, you can use Ophir Spiricon\u2019s BeamMaker to double check the SNR.\u00a0 BeamMaker is an artificial simulation of an ideal beam profile.\u00a0 You can then add the 4.1 counts of noise and compare to your real beam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Image Processing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if we made it to this point with a relatively accurate measurement, it\u2019s crucial to use correct image processing to keep this accuracy.\u00a0 Spiricon\u2019s Ultracal algorithm makes sure we use the correct baseline and don\u2019t truncate any part of the noise.\u00a0 Without this consideration one can easily end up with only a part of the noise, which will bias the signal unnecessarily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Computations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t trust ourselves either \u2013 not without measurements and double-checks, anyway \u2013 so we have two ways that we make sure our algorithms are accurate.<\/p>\n<p>The first method is with BeamMaker, similar to how it\u2019s used for the A\/D stage.\u00a0 The second method is by independent confirmation.\u00a0 The
