So, James gets his handy photodiode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/c\/power-meters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">power meter<\/a> set up, but he\u2019s still not sure how to get rid of all the noise<!--more-->.\u00a0 He can\u2019t just adjust the power meter by an offset since the light in his room is constantly changing.<\/p>\n<p>This is a common issue, especially with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/c\/photodiode-energy-sensors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photodiode sensors<\/a> since they are so sensitive.\u00a0 Even small light sources can quickly become a nuisance.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Okay, so what should he do?<\/p>\n<p>Should he use averaging?\u00a0 That could work, but there\u2019s no guarantee.\u00a0 Especially if he\u2019s also dealing with a slow drift in the noise, averaging might not be a complete solution.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what is: automatic background subtraction.<\/p>\n<p>Ophir\u2019s background subtracting photodiode sensors are actually a two-for-one deal.\u00a0 Each power meter comes with two photodiodes, one to measure the laser (and noise) and one to measure only the background noise.\u00a0 The electronics within the sensor does the background subtraction, so you can be sure that the number you read is the power of your laser \u2013 and only your laser.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Laser-Sensor-Background-Sensor.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3177 lazyload\"
