--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 579\/241;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>A Sample of Ophir Photonics\u2019 Thermal Laser Power Sensors<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ophir has a whole line of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/t\/laser-power-sensors-introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thermal sensors<\/a> that are optimized to function at a certain power continuously, but a higher power for a limited amount of time.\u00a0 These sensors are called X(Y)A-bla-bla-bla.\u00a0 This means the sensor can measure up to X Watts continuous power or Y Watts for Z minutes.\u00a0 (Z is not in the sensor name, but can be found in its datasheet.)<\/p>\n<p>The motivation here was when an engineer said, \u201cHold on.\u00a0 If I only turn on this 10W sensor for two minutes, it doesn\u2019t get so hot.\u00a0 In fact, it can actually measure up to 50W, as long as it\u2019s only on for two minutes.\u00a0 What if some of our customers only want to measure for a minute at a time?\u00a0 They\u2019ll be forced to pay more for a higher power sensor, when they really could have used this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As always, Ophir does not shy away from complexity.\u00a0 If there\u2019s a choice between simplicity and flexibility for our customer, we\u2019ll usually choose flexibility.\u00a0 But we still want to keep things as understandable as possible, so that\u2019s where this blog post comes in.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I got all that, but what specs are hidden?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Laser-Power-Sensor-Specs-Maximum-Intermittent-Power-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3097 lazyload\" title=\"Laser Power Sensor Specs: Maximum Intermittent Power\" data-src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Laser-Power-Sensor-Specs-Maximum-Intermittent-Power-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"154\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 579px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 579\/154;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Laser Power Sensor Specs: Maximum Intermittent Power<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As you may or may not have already guessed, there\u2019s nothing sacred about 2 minutes.\u00a0 If the L50(300)A-etc. sensor, for example, can measure 50W continuously, and 300W for 2 minutes, what if I want to measure 200W for 3 minutes?\u00a0 What about 100W for 5 minutes?\u00a0 The possibilities are endless, which is great for our flexibility goal, but not for the length of our datasheets.<\/p>\n<p>Our solution?\u00a0 We typically include one or two possibilities other than continuous power.<\/p>\n<p>But what if I\u2019m interested in a different combination of maximum power and measurement time?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where the tip comes in.<\/p>\n<h4>Pro Tip<\/h4>\n<p>Use our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/laser-sensor-finder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">laser sensor finder<\/a> to find the hidden specs.\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/our-laser-sensor-finder-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3098 lazyload\" title=\"Our laser sensor finder \" data-src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/our-laser-sensor-finder-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"178\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 178px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 178\/178;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Usually, our sensor finder is used to, well, find a sensor.\u00a0 Type in your laser\u2019s parameters and boom \u2013 out comes a sensor.\u00a0 Or a few sensors.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s try something a little different.\u00a0 You know which sensor you want \u2013 or already own.\u00a0 But you want to check if it works at a given set of laser parameters (in our case, maximum power Y and measurement duration Z).\u00a0 Simply, type in those parameters, as well as other laser characteristics, and check if you see your laser power sensor on the list of options.<\/p>\n<p>Or, if you want to measure 100W for as long as possible, start by entering 100W and 1 minute.\u00a0 If you see your sensor in the list, push the limit up to two minutes.\u00a0 Keep doing this until your sensor disappears, and \u2013 voila \u2013 that\u2019s how long you can leave your sensor on at 100W.<\/p>\n<p>I do want to stress, however, that if this seems complicated or you have any questions \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/contact-us\/photonics\">ask us<\/a>.\u00a0 We\u2019re here to help.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<address><em>You might also like to read:<\/em> <em><a title=\"Permanent Link to Do you completely understand the spec of your laser power sensor?\" href=\"\/?p=1185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Do you completely understand the spec of your laser power sensor?<\/a><\/em><\/address>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uhh, did you say hidden specs?
