{"id":2187,"date":"2012-10-03T13:19:37","date_gmt":"2012-10-03T13:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/laser-measurement\/?p=2187"},"modified":"2025-01-30T11:52:27","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T11:52:27","slug":"how-to-use-a-thermal-sensor-for-a-pulsed-laser-beam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/how-to-use-a-thermal-sensor-for-a-pulsed-laser-beam\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Use a Thermal Sensor for a Pulsed Laser Beam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Often times we are approached with a question about measuring low energy or power.\u00a0 For example, what if the laser has a low pulse energy but its average power is well above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/c\/high-sensitivity-thermal-sensors\">thermal sensor<\/a>\u2019s minimum threshold?\u00a0 Can the power be measured?\u00a0 What about the energy over some time?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When considering minimum thresholds, as opposed to damage thresholds, it all depends on what is being measured.\u00a0 If one is measuring single-shot energy, it is important to remember that thermal sensors don\u2019t recognize pulses more frequent than once in a few seconds. Instead, they treat the entire measurement, whether pulsed or cw, as one long pulse.\u00a0 Imagine for example a 50Hz pulsed laser beam with 1\u03bcJ of energy per pulse.\u00a0 If the beam is measured over one second, the thermal head sees one long 50\u03bcJ pulse.\u00a0 So even though the laser is rated at 1\u03bcJ, which is below the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/en\/c\/thermopile-sensors\">minimum measurable energy<\/a> of a 3A thermal sensor, the total energy of the train of pulses can be measured in this case without a problem.<\/p>\n<p>What about the average power?\u00a0 One millijoule over one second is one milliwatt.\u00a0 The minimum measurable power is 60\u03bcW so there\u2019s no problem measuring 1mW, right?\u00a0 Not so fast.\u00a0 Thermal sensors have a reaction time of about 3 seconds, so although all the measurements are well above the noise levels, we can\u2019t measure power unless the laser is on for at least 5-10 seconds.\u00a0 If that is not an option, one can alternatively measure the energy and calculate the average power by dividing the total energy by the amount of time the laser was left on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/thermal-sensor.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2191 lazyload\" title=\"Thermal sensor\" data-src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/thermal-sensor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"577\" height=\"307\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 577px;
