{"id":1624,"date":"2012-07-11T12:33:06","date_gmt":"2012-07-11T12:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/laser-measurement\/?p=1624"},"modified":"2025-01-30T12:53:51","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T12:53:51","slug":"how-low-can-you-measure-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/how-low-can-you-measure-power\/","title":{"rendered":"How Low Can You Measure Laser Power?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/?p=4598\">Ophir<\/a> has very high standards for what is considered \u201cmeasurable.\u201d\u00a0 That is why when we delineate a power scale, the minimum power is usually about 20 times the 3-sigma noise rating (or 60 times the RMS noise).\u00a0 Although it isn\u2019t inherently wrong to say that one can measure power lower than this scale, we believe that it is important to err on the side of caution when it comes to power scales and thresholds.<\/p>\n<p>However, this often leads people to ask: \u201cIf Ophir\u2019s standards are so strict, can I measure outside the range stated in the specs?\u201d\u00a0 What exactly happens as the laser power approaches the noise level?\u00a0 It\u2019s clear that if the laser power is of the same order as the noise, we won\u2019t get a meaningful reading.\u00a0 I want to discuss what happens to the accuracy level between the minimum laser power rating and the noise level.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/laser-measurement-instruments\/laser-power-energy-meters\/products\/power-sensors \">Ophir sensors<\/a> are typically calibrated to an accuracy of +\/- 3%, but as the laser approaches the noise level, the noise will affect this error more and more significantly.\u00a0 The graph below is a sample curve based on a noise of 2mW and a 3% maximum calibration error.\u00a0 As the graph suggests, this is not simply a linear effect.\u00a0 In fact, as the graph is logarithmic and already on a semi-logarithmic scale, one can see that the significance of the noise becomes much more relevant as the power gets lower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/\u05d1\u05dc\u05d5\u05d2-\u05d0\u05d5\u05e4\u05d9\u05e8.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1625 lazyload\" title=\"Accuracy vs power for noise 2mW\" data-src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/\u05d1\u05dc\u05d5\u05d2-\u05d0\u05d5\u05e4\u05d9\u05e8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"349\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/\u05d1\u05dc\u05d5\u05d2-\u05d0\u05d5\u05e4\u05d9\u05e8.jpg 430w, https:\/\/www.ophiropt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/\u05d1\u05dc\u05d5\u05d2-\u05d0\u05d5\u05e4\u05d9\u05e8-300x243.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 430px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 430\/349;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Knowledge is the key.\u00a0 The specs that Ophir writes down are not magic numbers.\u00a0 They are in fact extra-cautious, so it is certainly \u201cpermissible\u201d to cross these thresholds.\u00a0 With the above information and an understanding of your application requirements, you should be able to make an educated decision about where to draw your own line.<\/p>\n<p><em>You might also like to read:\u00a0<a title=\"Quiet!
